Online Sharing: Say Goodbye to the Email AttachmentPosted: February 15, 2013
Teachers, are you tired of sending and resending email attachments, forgetting files on your home computer, and constantly deleting large emails to make room for more? Then read on! The solution to your problems = online sharing.
Uploading your files to an online sharing service is a much more efficient alternative to email. All you need to do is upload files or sync a file sharing device with your computer, and magically your files can be accessed with any internet-enabled device. This is an easy way for you and your students to share assignments and transfer electronic documents from school to home and vice versa.
There are many types of online sharing tools, each with slight variations. Some are free, some charge a fee, some support your files indefinitely, while other only support them for a short period of time. You can control who you invite to view your files with Google Drive and Dropbox, but with most of the other sites your information is public. Take a look at the ones I have listed. A quick internet search will provide you with many more options too (Google “online sharing tools”).
The following websites offer services for hosting and sharing your information online. This is definitely not an extensive list, but should get you started:
- Google Drive (document sharing and creation)
- Flickr (photo sharing)
- Pinterest (photo sharing)
- Dropbox (document sharing)
- YouTube (video sharing)
- Vimeo (video sharing)
To share documents, Dropbox is definitely my favourite. Files automatically sync from your computer to your online Dropbox account. You can invite people to view your folders, and also send the URL to people.
If you want to share documents and work collaboratively on them, then Google Drive is what you are looking for. You are limited to using the Google Drive options for creating word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and more. But it’s a good way to share and collaborate on a draft or group project.
Happy file sharing! Please comment with other online file sharing systems you find useful for education and any other purposes.
